Sony Adds Virtual Expander to Micro Vault USB Storage Media - an old Article

PARK RIDGE, N.J., May, 31, 2005 -- Sony's latest enhancements to its Micro Vaultâ„¢ USB storage media line include a new Virtual Expander feature that stretches the virtual capacity of the device to store as much as three times more data.

The Virtual Expander feature is included in the latest Classic and Mini Micro Vault designs.

In addition, Sony is introducing the Micro Vault Turbo with a rapid 28MB/sec maximum transfer speed. Together, these products create a comprehensive offering for increasingly storage-hungry users who need to take more data and high quality multimedia content wherever they go.

"Virtual Expander meets the ever-increasing need for more storage, freeing Micro Vault users to store, share and transport more data than ever," said Mike Lucas, director of marketing for Sony Electronics' consumer media group. "This new feature is extremely attractive because it adds versatility and value for consumers."

Good in a Crunch

The Virtual Expander feature is an integrated feature that allows users to virtually squeeze more into their Micro Vault media effortlessly. Files are automatically compressed/decompressed when loaded on and off, creating virtual storage that is as much as three times the native capacity (depending on file type - already compressed files may not compress further). Once activated, users maximize their storage capabilities seamlessly. Users can choose to compress individual files or the entire device contents at once.

Speedier Storage, Greater Security

Another advance in Sony's storage lineup is Micro Vault Turbo, featuring a pace setting 28MB/sec maximum transfer speed and a software suite featuring Password Lock. Micro Vault Turbo media makes quick work of moving large amounts of data and accessing large files such as high-resolution pictures or DVD-quality video. Micro Vault Turbo media comes in a champagne-color shell and offers 1GB capacity.

Other offerings that round out the Micro Vault lineup include the Fingerprint Access Micro Vault with advanced biometric security plus file encryption for protecting sensitive information and Micro Vault Pro media, delivering 5GB of high-speed storage in a form factor about the length and width of a business card.

Storage for Today's Digital Lifestyle

"Micro Vault is a powerful tool to extend our digital lifestyles wherever we go, Lucas said. "Consumers want their data at their fingertips, and this makes it easy."

Micro Vault media with the Virtual Expander feature is currently shipping at the same suggested retail prices as the prior Micro Vault line. Micro Vault Turbo media will ship in June at a suggested retail price of $129.99.
